The legend of the werewolf originates in ancient myths and folklore, with roots in Greek mythology, Norse sagas, and even earlier Proto-Indo-European beliefs. The modern understanding of the werewolf as a "cursed creature" was heavily shaped during the European Middle Ages, influenced by Christian interpretations of pagan stories and eventual witch trials. These stories have been told and retold for hundreds of generations; today we associate the werewolf most closely with the full moon, when the cursed are helpless to resist it's dark magic.
